TF2: Scream Fortress Begins

For the second straight year, Valve has rolled out a Halloween update for Team Fortress 2, this time with a new map, several new items and achievements, and an actual boss — the Horseless Headless Horsemann.

The map, “Mann Manor,” is your standard control-point scenario, a la Dustbowl. The catch is, every once in a while, the Horsemann spawns, who basically runs amok and one-shots everyone he attacks. However, he’s quite killable — he just has a lot of health, so it takes some time before he drops. As a result, he tends to be a major distraction, and if the two teams are engaged in a standoff, the Horsemann can upset that balance long enough to let one team break through.

Of course, there are plenty of new goodies to get during the holiday (which runs through Nov. 8). The Horsemann drops a special hat you can wear for the duration of the event, as well as a Haunted Metal scrap used to craft unique Halloween recipes. There are a variety of masks players can find in gift boxes that randomly appear during gameplay, and of course there are some new achievements associated with all this frivolity.

Valve is also using the update to keep pushing its new in-game store. Each of the four unique Halloween hats can be purchased outright for $9.99, as well as some 25-use noisemakers for $0.49, perfect for annoying your friends (or enemies). Happy Haunting!
