There weren’t many surprises expected at the opening ceremonies of Blizzcon 2010, which kicked off today in Anaheim. In fact, anyone who’d followed Blizzcon before could probably write the schedule:
– Â CEO Mike Morhaime welcomes everyone
 – Video of cool Blizzard stuff from the last year: Blizzcon 09, the Starcraft II launch, various tourneys, etc
 – Some brief tomfoolery from someone else at Blizz
 – Maybe a news announcement, probably for Diablo III, since Starcraft II is out and WoW: Cataclysm is a month away.
And that’s exactly how it went down. The tomfoolery was provided by Chris Metzen, who did a slideshow on the word “geek,” milking the crowd for easy cheers by showing photos of Transformers and Star Wars. There was indeed news for Diablo III, as the crowd was treated to video of the game’s fifth and final class, the demon hunter, as well as the reveal of a new arena battle mode.
Keeping with the theme, Blizzard followed up the opening ceremonies with a Diablo III panel, where the game’s leads showed off the new demon hunter and also discussed the evolution of the game, from the various classes to skill systems to interface elements. Now if they’d just release the game (is 2011 too much to hope for?), we’d be set!
